A national holiday for a historic president; not a bad idea.
Worth thinking about. I mean Lincoln has one. Washington has one. Why not Obama, our first black President?
The righties certainly won’t like the idea. But then again, even they, with their Obama hatred, can’t deny the historical importance of his election.
Some info on the proposed holiday:
Plans are being made to promote a national holiday for Barack Obama, who will become the nation’s 44th president when he takes the oath of office Jan. 20.
“Yes We Can” planning rallies will be at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the downtown McDonald’s restaurant, 1100 Kansas Ave., until Jan. 13. The goals are to secure a national holiday in Obama’s honor, to organize celebrations around his inauguration and to celebrate the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12 1809.
At 7:30 a.m. on Inauguration Day, Obama Cake will be served at the downtown McDonald’s, and a celebration is scheduled for 8 p.m. to midnight Jan. 20 at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, 420 S.E. 6th.

Holidays are not named for living persons. Let’s not go crazy with the racial bit.

Time for the smelling salts! How about waiting until he actually accomplishes something noteworthy while in office? He hasn’t even been inaugurated yet! Sheesh.
I’m with roblavett – national holidays are not named for living persons. ‘nuf said.

Well that’s not really true. In 1971 Nixon proclaimed one single federal public holiday, the Presidents’ Day. So in reality each President’s Day we celebrate living Presidents like Carter and Clinton.

Like I said on another thread, as a Dem, I think this is ridiculous. I smell a prank to fool Repubs!
November 9th, 2008 19:21
We don’t need tricks and gags to make republicans look like fools
.

If we accomplishes what Lincoln and Washington did, then give him a holiday, most definitely. I think FDR might deserve one before Obama, but that’s just me.

I thought fdr was the antichrist to a lot of conservatives with his socialism and all.
November 9th, 2008 20:14
I think you must be confusing “antichrist” with “asinine”, Scholar…
November 9th, 2008 20:16
FDR was asinine. Gotcha. Saved this country, but he’s asinine.
November 9th, 2008 20:36
He’s not the anti-christ by any means…some of the programs became very problematic, but he was very strong in tough times.
November 9th, 2008 21:20
If by extending the Great Depression 7 years you mean saved the country then yes.. he saved the country…
November 9th, 2008 21:30
And the counterfactual? How did he have the power to end it earlier? What should he have done?

Are we making a Holiday because he is half white or half “African America”. Give me a break! He is our first bi-racial president, PERIOD! Actually our first Muslim President!!! Aren’t we a proud nation. Let’s just throw away a man that sacrificed his life for ouR country, for man who’s mentor is an American hater and a bigot! This is public knowledge. We all need to not be so “PC” and we all have our own minds and not vote because Oprah votes for them!! All this election had shown me is that most of America follows the herd! I am very sad!

Before we decide to make a national holiday for a president we need to see what this man will do for our counrty. And since he is being referred to as “Obamessiah” does that mean this holiday will also include a decorated tree with gifts underneth? Everyone keeps saying we are making history to bad this may be the last chapter in “The Book of America”.

He’s only being called “Obamaessiah” by idiots like Michelle Malkin who have been hatin’ on Obama for day one since he exposes how weak and ineffective the conservatives have been for so long.
November 10th, 2008 00:37
Umm… sad, Obama is NOT a muslim. He is not swearing into office on a Quran… This rumor was cleared up months ago. And his preacher is not an american hater. Just because someone’s political and religous views don’t line up with your own doesn’t mean that they are any less patriotic, and love their coutnry any less.
This is directed to everyone, not just sad. Get your heads out from under that rock. Dissent is Patriotism. This country would run so much smoother if people would just realize that there are two completely opposite accounts to every story. And generally neither of them are right, but rather, the answer is somewhere in between. It is every single person’s resposibility to read more than just one news source, listen to more than one opinion… Don’t be a part of the herd!! If you don’t believe me, or even if you do, I’m reccomending the site http://www.realclearpolitics.com to you all. You’ll see what I mean.

Scholar in Training, have blinders on. You bash one party and praise the other. Please open your eyes and realize the politicians are only in politics for themselves. Both parties continue to screw over the American public while keeping you distracted with the election soap opera. Democrats get blame the Republicans, Republicans get to blame the Democrats, and nothing ever changes. We had 8 years of Clinton, then 8 years of Bush and now we’re back to a Democrat and it’s all going to be “new” this time? Let start ignoring what party a politician is in and start evaluating them at an individual level. I’m convinced we’ll find all of them lacking.

HIS SKIN MAY BE BLACK BUT HE ALSO HALF WHITE!!!
November 30th, 2008 04:07
“Are we making a Holiday because he is half white or half “African America”.
Ok. Then we’ll have 1/2 a holiday.
