Word on the street: Kerry high on list for Secretary of State

Insiders are telling us that Kerry is quite high on the list of potential Secretary of State candidates. A Couple Things has learned that high-ranking Democrats have been mentioning Kerry’s name in private transition meetings for weeks now and Kerry apparently wants the position. The Boston Globe has reported that Kerry refuses to rule out the position. We all know what that means in politics: he wants it.
The Washington Independent is also saying that Kerry is near the top of the list. Some are suggesting he has already been offered the job.
Question for the readers: would Kerry make a good replacement for Condi Rice? He’s definitely popular, having won the popular vote against Bush in 2004. He has the experience. I think it would be a good chioce.

He would be a horrible choice. One of the reasons that he lost in 2004 was because of his spotty history in his relationship toward the military. Not to mention, he’s a dumb-ass, which doesn’t help.

And are you thinking of 2000? Kerry didn’t win the popular vote.
November 5th, 2008 17:11
Ooops, yeah my bad, I was thinking Gore. Must still be drunk from last night.
November 5th, 2008 17:12
haha, I’d even prefer him as Secretary of State over Kerry, and that’s a scary thought.
November 5th, 2008 17:14
Besides him being an “ass” (nice analytics, by the way), is there anything in particular policy-wise you think kerry sucks at?
November 5th, 2008 17:16
dumb-ass is the exact language I believe I used, and I’m proud of that usage. I think he is soft and will get pushed around on the world’s stage. You may not like Condi Rice, but she is tough, as was Colin Powell (although if he was tougher, perhaps the Iraq war would have been a little different). Honestly, I think someone like Joe Biden would be a better Secretary of State than V.P.

Just out of curiosity, can you explain why we want someone “tough” in foreign affairs. Might be tough lead one to close off certain options (like diplomacy) when they are more advantageous than the alternative (tough war)? Aren’t carrots sometimes more useful than sticks?
November 5th, 2008 17:23
Tough doesn’t equal tough with bombs. Tough diplomacy is very valuable and I don’t want someone getting pushed around in those talks. I just don’t see Kerry as someone I trust with that position.

You’re describing someone like Bolton, our UN Ambassador, who has been able to get absolutely nothing at all done. And it’s because he takes a hard line negotiating style on everything.
November 5th, 2008 17:33
C’mon…there has got to be someone better in the entire democratic party who could make a good s of s…isn’t there?
November 5th, 2008 17:37
Sure Bob Zoellick or Bill Richardson or even Hillary Clinton
.
November 5th, 2008 17:41
I would actually be okay with Hillary…she’s a tough cookie…Bill Richardson, eh.
November 5th, 2008 17:46
I just though liberals care about smart people…John Kerry has to be one of the dumbest Democrats out there.
November 5th, 2008 17:47
Evidence that he’s dumb?
November 5th, 2008 17:53
Well, I suppose it isn’t fair…I always argue against the claim that Bush is dumb…But I do remember the media was going to release GPAs of Kerry and Bush until they realized Bush did better than Kerry at Yale.

Right, that’s kind of what I’m saying, it’s hard to argue that Kerry is dumb and then bemoan the folks the say the same thing about Dubya.
November 5th, 2008 17:58
so you think dubya is a smarty pants? me too!!!
