Sin Taxes
This website is trying to get folks to petition their representation to limit or reduce so-called “sin taxes.” I couldn’t disagree more. I’m all for taxing the hell out of cigarettes and alcohol. They should also legalize pot and tax the crap out of that as well.

hmmm, taxing addiction?
March 10th, 2009 09:28
Sounds good to me.
March 10th, 2009 09:29
not surprising.

Why is taxing addiction a bad thing? Said addictions are sending people to hospitals for medical coverage they can’t afford that I end up paying for. Why can’t I get my money back?
March 10th, 2009 09:31
Well you shouldn’t be paying for their medical bills.
March 10th, 2009 09:44
If they don’t have insurance who is going to pay then?
March 10th, 2009 09:53
Guess they should have thought of that before they took up smoking, eh?

Compassionate conservatism strikes again!

Seriously though, if we have to tax people, why not smokers and alcoholics? Maybe said taxation will drive them away from the addiction.
March 10th, 2009 10:44
Yeah, I’m not overly upset with that. But out of curiosity, what socio-economic level might that target…I have my own suspicions that that might be going against some of our President’s constituency.
March 10th, 2009 10:45
What do you mean? We’re all the President’s constituency.
March 10th, 2009 10:47
haha, not really. It sounds like a backdoor way of taxing the lower and middle classes.
March 10th, 2009 10:48
So only the lower and middle classes smoke and drink?
March 10th, 2009 10:49
no, they don’t…but they would be a target. and the wealthier classes, who want to avoid the taxes, may be able to afford nicer rehab centers, etc. to give up the addiction.
March 10th, 2009 10:51
I don’t understand. Republicans often want a “flat tax” so that everyone pays their “fair” share. Here we have an example of a flat tax on cigarettes and alcohol, so everyone pays the same tax, and you’re complaining that the poor and middle class people will suffer?
Did you become a liberal while on vacation, YF?
March 10th, 2009 10:52
haha, i’m not arguing…i’m predicting a complaint.
March 10th, 2009 10:53
I think you’re evolving into a liberal.
You wouldn’t be the first I’ve converted.
March 10th, 2009 11:31
the only concern i have for this issue is that it might lead to a state tax against my beloved soda, and if that happens, i’m going to be pissed.
March 10th, 2009 11:35
Yes, God forbid you should have to cut back on your carbonation.

I’m shocked that the compassionate conservative YF has nothing to say about the stem cell issue being completely overturned by Obama: http://www.acouplethings.com/blog/2009/03/obama-to-overturn-bush-policy-on-stem-cells/
